Protecting Newsstand Operators (Repeal Local Law 64)

Background

The New York City Newsstand Operators Association, supported by the Neighborhood Retail Alliance, has filed suit against the City of New York, the Department of Transportation (DOT) and the Department of Consumer Affairs (DCA). The purpose of the suit is to stop the implementation of Local Law 64, the so-called street furniture bill, because the law will force the relocation of more than 60 newsstands in New York City, approximately 22% of the remaining stands.  Intro 430, a bill that would repeal the city’s street furniture bill, sponsored by Councilman Councilman Hiram Monseratte and also cosponsored by nine other council members, is designed to protect the livelihoods of these more than 60 newsstands.
