The Bronx Terminal Market
consists of numerous wholesalers who employ 700
workers and supply tens of thousands of New York
City restaurants, bodegas and markets. These
mostly minority merchants, supplying hard-to-get
ethnic goods to New York's new immigrant
communities, have been evicted to make way for a
"redevelopment" plan that will include big box
stores. The City has promised the merchants
paltry compensation and has failed to offer a
relocation plan where they can remain together, the
only economically viable scenario. Making
matters worse, the new developer, the Related
Companies, was awarded control of the property in a
sweetheart deal without any type of
competitive, open bidding process. |
